BKN: Coach Beverly Kiser-Nutt

MS: Maxine Serrano, owner of Inbox Chic

BKN: What do you do, and for how long have you been doing it?

MS: I am a Jack of all Trades! In March I was working as an event planner, which ended due to COVID-19. It was a real gut punch for me, and I asked myself, “what do I do next?” Ultimately, I decided to take my years of experience and create my own business as a virtual assistant. I work with businesses helping with scheduling appointments, customer follow-up calls, HR, social media management, payroll, and day-to-day workflow.

BKN: Who is your best customer or target customer?

MS: My best customer would be the Human Resources Director that needs extra support, or even an event planner needing project management assistance.

BKN: What has been the biggest impact of COVID-19 on your business?

MS: The biggest impact of COVID-19 for me was losing my job. It ended up being an amazing time and a blessing because I was able to spend more time at home with my 16-year-old daughter. We had quality time and great conversations. It helped me to better understand the importance of work-life balance.

BKN: What are 1 or 2 actions you've taken because of the pandemic?

MS: For me, it was quick learning and watching YouTube videos to train myself to launch a new business. I decided to create an online summit, so I called a couple of women and kicked off the event, and everyone who participated was encouraged and enjoyed the time we shared. My business is up and running now, and I am going strong.

BKN: What has been your biggest learning since you've been a business owner?

MS: I’ve learned to be bold and put myself out there, to build relationships, and not to be shy in sales.

BKN: What is most inspiring to you today?

MS: I was most inspired by watching Self Made, the movie about CJ Walker. I thought if she could do that back then and be successful, I can start my own business now. Living in a country where you can do this, make an income, start a business – especially seeing some of the challenges in other countries – it gives you a deep appreciation of life here in America.
