BKN: What do you do, and for how long have you been doing it?
DJ: We started in 2010 and have now reached ten years of creating university-based apparel. We do licensing, put art on shirts, etc. – but I fell in love with the business side.
BKN: Who is your best customer?
DJ: Universities and those who love our QJackson Brand!
BKN: What has been the biggest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
DJ: There wasn’t a big impact for us. We were impacted because we’re a college-based brand and there were no gatherings on campus to promote our apparel. Changing the way we do events has been huge.
BKN: What are 1 or 2 actions you've taken because of pandemic, and how are they working?
DJ: We switched to an online presence with videos and photos. Videos have been a big part of our marketing because everyone watches videos. We also use them to talk about current events, educational opportunities and promotional pieces for the company. Growing the online presence has been a big part of us adapting to the changes of COVID-19. We miss face-to-face interactions, though.
BKN: What is the biggest learning you’ve had since you've been a business owner?
DJ: Get out of your own way. Be flexible to change. Learn from your mistakes. I left college 18 years ago to go into business, and a lot of my learning has been life learning. No classroom can teach you what you will learn actually doing business.
BKN: What is most inspiring to you today?
DJ: Working and collaborating with people and other businesses. We love cross-branding!
