MH: What does your company do, and how long have you been doing it?
PS: I started Media Placement Services in 1992. We are a media planning and buying service, so we work with advertisers on where to place their ads to reach the right audience at the right time in the right place. For example, we place banner ads, paid ads on social media, and do search engine marketing.
MH: Who is your best customer or your target market?
PS: The best fit for us is a customer relationship where we work with their internal marketing team of an organization and become an extension of their team. In other cases, a client may have an outside creative agency use us for just media placement. By design, we work in a variety of industries, with a large part of our clientele made up of the financial, education and healthcare organizations. We also work with municipalities, nonprofits, government projects, community colleges, and four–year universities.
MH: How has your business been impacted by COVID-19?
PS: There hasn’t been a lot of impact – we are very fortunate in that. Initially we had some cancellations for placed media for specific events, but the media campaigns for education clients to recruit students were not changed. I think the biggest impact of COVID-19 has been not being able to meet with our clients face-to-face.
MH: What are one or two actions that you’ve taken because of COVID-19?
PS: We have implemented Zoom meetings for our internal team and for clients. Zoom has been more effective than email communication, especially when multiple team members are needed to brainstorm on strategy. Because we’re on Zoom or the phone so much, we’ve learned that we have to work on balancing that with the day–to-day tasks of executing the campaigns.
MH: What is the biggest learning you’ve had as a business owner?
PS: Invest time and finances in hiring the right people and providing the right training for the team. Business owners tend to get wrapped up in the day–to–day and go through some processes like hiring a little too quickly. I have learned that not rushing that process and taking your time with potential candidates helps make a better hire.
MH: What is inspiring you most in 2020?
PS: What inspires me, day in and day out, is serving others. That is what this business is about and what I’m about personally, whether it’s mentoring young people in the industry, serving a coworker with support and training, or serving in the community as a volunteer. I’m grateful that we still can serve, and I think it’s been neat to watch how creative people have been to adapt and overcome the challenges of COVID.
